Kara Carter

Kara Carter combines over 10 years of consulting experience in both healthcare and financial services with 15 years of business expertise, including investment portfolio analytics, financial planning and analysis, change management, and operations management and leadership. Her career is highlighted by achievement of tremendous operational results through the successful employment of Continuous Improvement practices.

At Orion Advisory Kara has coached teams through multi-generational strategic planning, led process improvement projects, and worked with dozens of leadership teams to manage organizational change. Kara specializes in the transfer of continuous improvement skills to create new performance management capability for her clients. She was a central contributor in customizing and adapting Orion Advisory’s continuous improvement tools and practices to introduce them in the healthcare industry.

Kara partnered with the leaders and caregivers of one of the nation’s largest academic medical centers, the Cleveland Clinic, to implement and integrate a common operational platform across all clinical institutes, administrative and support divisions, as well as the integration of all of Community Hospitals and Family Health Centers. This work included leading strategic planning and process improvement initiatives and implementing the Business Review process in more than 20 clinical institutes, including cancer, neurology, imaging, medicine, digestive disease, dermatology and plastic surgery, heart and vascular, and respiratory disease. Additionally, Kara has experience with surgery, medical operations, hospital operations, government relations, information technology, and others.

In addition to her work at the Cleveland Clinic, Kara has led strategic planning efforts with several Non-Profit organizations. Working with leadership teams large and small, Kara has coached board members from 5 continents in fields as varied as the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, the International Transplant Nurses Society, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Prior to her focus in the healthcare industry, Kara began her career working for Peter Lynch as a Mutual Fund Accountant at Fidelity Investments. Ultimately, her work at Fidelity spanned areas as diverse as Fund Accounting, Portfolio Analysis to the office of the CFO. She led initiatives including implementing a revolutionary in-house pricing system, advising Fund managers of upcoming capital actions and their associated Fund implications, advising retail marketing on emerging industry trends and customer behavior, and developing a shareholder transaction pricing model. Later, at KeyCorp she developed a similar standardized financial planning model for Operations. Kara then moved into operations and rapidly rose to the rank Vice President and Manager of 401(k) Operations. In this role she achieved dramatic results through the use of continuous improvement tools and techniques. In less than two years, Kara led her 401(k) operations team to 25% improvement on quality and timeliness measures while simultaneously reducing costs by 30% and clearing all unacceptable audit findings.

Kara was recruited to begin her college career at the United States Air Force Academy where she was on the Commandant's List for Military Excellence and was a varsity cross country and track athlete. She is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Northeastern University with a BSBA in Finance. Kara is a member of the prestigious Sigma Epsilon Rho Honor Society and she ran varsity track and cross country. She is an accomplished athlete, competing in several marathons including five trips to the Boston Marathon. As a mother of four children she has served on the Shaker Heights Ohio Parent Teacher Organization in many roles, including PTO President and Vice President of Financial Management.
