Karen Branick

Karen brings a wide variety of experience to Orion Advisory including, 25+ years in process design and redesign, Six Sigma and Lean methods, integration of operational systems, strategy development and business plan execution and powerful coaching skills. Karen has applied her expertise in fields such as healthcare, electric utilities, product formulation, manufacturing and business development.

At Carolinas Healthcare System in Charlotte, NC, Karen worked hand in hand with top leaders to integrate nine cancer practices, and an 82 chair outpatient infusion room in their new Levine Cancer Institute which opened in September 2012. Karen led a leadership assessment with ongoing coaching to identify specific move and start-up related projects. She and her team developed new work standard flows such as a patient-centric blood draw process, patient rooming flows and improved chemo readiness standards for the infusion room. New roles and work standards were developed for the infusion room nurses and supporting staff. Through a change leadership approach, internal nursing staff members were able to emerge as leaders.

Karen’s 5 years of working with the Cleveland Clinic at both the Ohio and Florida campuses allowed her to coach and guide hundreds of individuals who participated on improvement teams and business plan execution initiatives. These years of partnering with the Cleveland Clinic provided the basis and opportunity for Karen to co-author a book, Experiencing Improvement, which features many of the teams and their successes, as well as the challenges faced integrating continuous process improvement and strategy building tools into the healthcare industry.

Prior to joining Orion Advisory, Karen began as a process engineer in the plastics industry responsible for eliminating defects and solving manufacturing problems. She has formulated hair care products and managed production schedules for goods and products with sales exceeding $20+ million annually. Karen then spent nearly 10 years working in the energy industry at Florida Power & Light Company and TECO Energy where she gained expertise in power plant operations, bulk power sales, regulatory affairs and merger and acquisition evaluations and integrations. Karen has provided testimony related to bulk fuel purchases and usage, environmental expenditures and other electricity generating related costs. She has served as an expert witness for the Tampa based utility before the Florida Public Service Commission on multiple occasions.

Other areas where Karen has excelled is in filling the role of Master Blackbelt and Blackbelt on Six Sigma and Lean engagements working in the pharmaceutical industry and with the U.S. Marine Corps to implement strategic initiatives and mitigate risk.

Karen received her Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and she holds a Master of Inland Steam, Coastal Steam or Motor Vessels License for up to 50 Gross Tons from the United States Coast Guard.
